Welcome to my Web site. This is the place to come for the latest news on my art and educator activities. Please look around, let me know what you think, and come again! And don't forget to check out the button project update, my calendar and the newest additions to the gallery.
Snow arrived on last Sunday. The days are short. The air is considerably colder. It is decidedly winter in Maine. I am feeling grateful for the energy and support that is growing for the new directions I am pursuing in my art and my education. In late October I received an amazing phone call from fellow Maine artist Peter Buotte. Once a year, Peter draws a slide from a fishbowl of images solicited from artists all over the world. Since 2004, he has personally funded a grant to the artist selected at random. Each year the amount has increased; this year my slide was selected and the grant was for $1250! As you can see in this picture Peter is true to his promise and is giving me a check for this year's Fishbowl Grant. I have to say that as wonderful as this financial gift is, the real gift is getting to know this amazing artist, who is currently headed to Baghdad, Iraq. He is a Major in the Reserves and will be working on civil affairs. I send him prayers for a safe return home to Maine.
In October, I went to Gainesville Florida to attend my first intensive course in Wisdom University's Masters of Art and Healing. Although the week had some ups and downs, all in all I am thrilled to be on this new path of taking my art and teaching to a new level. In January I will be traveling to India to study chanting with Russill Paul. This group pilgrimage will be an independent study towards my Masters degree. I will be drawing and writing during my travels with a focus on learning about spirituality, art and healing in the Hindu culture.
This November I had the good fortunate to be invited back to Schoodic Point, Acadia National Park. I was an artist in residence for almost three weeks, focusing my studio time on new screen art works. Keep your eyes open for new postings in the gallery section. Speaking of the gallery, watch for my art to be shown in the winter issue of Maine Home and Design magazine.
Shortly I will be commencing a new community art project called 'Woven Voices'. This project begins a new direction for my art: art without attachment to a financial outcome, art that is impermanent and community based. For this project I will be soliciting paper messages of hope and positive thought. I will take these paper messages and cut them into thin strips, weave them into a series of prayer flags. My dream is that messages from Iraq will be woven with dreams from Iowa, and hopes from Arizona will be woven with prayers from Pakistan. As a series of flags is completed, I will return them to individuals, schools or groups that sent me messages. These colorful woven flags will be hung outside in a variety of communities to allow the messages to be released to the universe.
And finally here is a September photo of a community weaving project from Nottingham, NH. I am standing with Janet Horvath, NottinghamÃs recreation director. Please let me know what you think of my website. I enjoy hearing from you.
Peace to all in this season of light and love, Sarah
