What's Now, July 2006

Welcome to my Web site. This is the place to come for the latest news on my art and educator activities. Please look around, let me know what you think, and come again! And don't forget to check out the button project update, my calendar and the newest additions to the gallery.

The seasons fold one onto another. It is summer here in Maine, the peas are flowering, and the window boxes are overflowing with color. Early this spring I was a visiting artist at Peters Valley Craft Center in Layton, New Jersey. For four weeks I was able to concentrate on my work without the usual distractions of home and teaching. One of the projects that I completed was a series of prayer flags woven out of hand spun paper.

Prayer Flags, Peters Valley

Before leaving for New Jersey, I gave my neighbor, who is in treatment for breast cancer, a large sheet of paper, a paint brush and ink and asked her to write down all her worries. I cut this paper into one continuous strip, spun it into a thin thread and wove it into a series of prayer flags. For three weeks, I hung these flags over a stream, washing her worries downstream. Upon my return home, I gave her the cleansed flags to hang in her garden.

During my residency, I also created prayer flags with my own worries and those of others I met in the local arts community. With this project, I have begun to take the concept of art that transforms and heals to a new level. Thread by thread, I hope to make a difference in this world.

Also this spring, I was an artist in residence at two schools. One was an alternative high school in Saco, Maine, and the other a middle school in Hollis, New Hampshire. Both schools offered me opportunities to grow as a teaching artist. Pictures of the completed projects will follow in my next update.

From the new series

My artwork continues to prosper. A new series completed in New Jersey titled "Four little houses with big feelings" and a series called "Spinning Houses" that is still in process.

Some exciting news: "Each One: The Button Project, a 9/11 Memorial" has been invited to be exhibited at the Marriott Financial Center in New York City as part of the Voices of September 11th 5th Anniversary Memorial.

Please check out my gallery and send me a note with your thoughts about my work. I appreciate hearing from you!

And please check out my calendar for current and future exhibits, residencies and workshops.

As ever, thank you for your interest and support of my artwork and teaching. I hope the beauty of this earth brings you joy.

Peace,
Sarah
