Laotion girl weaving

It is late autumn as I write this update. The colored leaves have been swept into every corner of the yard by the wind, except for the stubborn few which still cling to bare branches. I love this time of year. It is conducive to working in my studio, to focusing on my artwork and teaching, and to feeling grounded.

Late summer and fall yielded opportunities to create art, as well as some interesting venues for sharing my passion for the woven art form. One of my favorite images is this young Laotian girl working on a community weaving at the Newmarket (NH) Heritage Festival in late September.

In early October I had the privilege of going to the Open Door Workshop at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts on Deer Isle, ME . While I was there, the weather was extraordinary and inspired me to take a few pictures. In the workshop, I learned how to spin kozo paper into thread to create shifu - an ancient Japanese technique of weaving paper into cloth. I have been experimenting with this technique in my studio. Watch for the new art work!

In September, I was a finalist (the second year in a row) for the Greater Piscataqua Community Foundation Artist Advancement Grant. In October I received a Good Idea Grant from the Maine Commission on the Arts which allowed me to purchase new software to run my loom.

As my teaching load lightens, I am working more on my artwork. I have a couple of shows lined up for the spring, and a few interesting gallery invitations in the works. This is exciting for me, since it has been years since I have had the opportunity to devote so much time to my art work. It is a privilege and a gift to have this occasion.

Peace,

Sarah
