Woven Dance

Summer has finally come! The heat is glorious after the long cold winter and the wet cool spring. During the spring months I had a wonderful balance of studio time and teaching. It is always such a joy when that sense of equilibrium settles in for a spell. I had a busy spring completing many new pieces, as well as participating in two prestigious exhibits. In March I was awarded 2nd Prize in the National Fibers Exhibit in Wichita, Kansas. The Button Project is in a juried international show at The Artists' Museum in Washington DC, July 9-31.

Since my last update, I have visited many new schools and guided several teacher workshops. The first image seen here is from the Connecticut HOT Schools conference (July 2003) where I coordinated a community weaving project, as well as co-taught a workshop with choreographer Shawn Womack from California. The workshop was titled "Woven Dance" and explored ways to reinvent the traditional Maypole dance.

Earlier in the Spring I visited the North Yarmouth/Cumberland (ME) School and worked with the 5th graders to make a weaving based on the theme of diversity. The below left image is the final weaving in a beautiful loom that became the finished frame for the piece.

Other schools that I visited include the SERESC School in Derry, NH, an alternative middle school. The students, teachers and I worked on a collaborative dream catcher which you see below right.

I wish I had more space to show you the amazing paper weavings and writings that the 7th graders in Westport, CT created and the Greek inspired weavings and writings from Warren, ME. I will try to update the residency images soon, so that all these amazing projects will be able to be highlighted.

Each school that I visit brings new energy to my work as a teaching artist. I am grateful for each opportunity to share my passion for weaving and self-awareness through the arts.

Sarah
