Welcome to my Web site. This is the place to come for the latest news on my art and educator activities. Please look around, let me know what you think, and come again! And don't forget to check out the button project update and my calendar.
The white of snow still dominates the colors outside my studio windows, but the piles have definitely diminished in size. Today I heard my first robin, and his song brought joy to my spirit. Spring will come - we know this by these subtle changes in nature.
In January I travelled to the Helen Thompson School in Gardiner, ME. In the three days of my residency, I worked with all the students in the school to create a tapestry that depicts the school's annual festival. Pictured here is a wonderful detail from this all-school collaborative weaving.
Also in January, I was an artist-in-residence at the Pittsfield Elementary School in Pittsfield, NH. During this ten-day residency, I worked with the 3rd and 4th graders on their own independent weaving projects as well as a grade level collaborative project. The 3rd grade designed and wove a tapestry that tells the story of the Pittsfield Balloon Festival. (below left) The 4th grade designed and wove a tapestry that was a historical map of the Pittsfield village. (below right) This highly successful residency was well supported by the art teacher, the principal, community volunteers and by the 3rd and 4th grade teachers. I am very proud of the finished weavings, and feel pleased that the school gained valuable skills for integrating art into everyday curriculum needs.
Now it is March and I am looking forward to an extended stretch of studio time in April, after I complete two short residencies in Maine. This is a long overdue studio stint, and I am bursting with creative ideas. Look for several new artworks for the gallery's next update.
As the snow melts on this rainy day, I feel myself softening to the anticipation of spring. For months, the thought of warm air, the smell of earth and the melody of a bird have seemed a distant memory. Now these elusive spring sensations are nearing reality.
Peace,
Sarah
