What's Now, May 2002

Welcome to my new Web site - we are still building up the content, so please look around, let me know what you think, and come again!

As we get more organized, this will be the place to come for the latest news on my art and educator activities.

And don't forget to check out the button project update and my calendar.

March and April were my busiest months for many seasons. I began these months with a trip up to Northern Maine where I wove with middle school students in Caribou and Van Buren, and teachers at University of ME at Presque Isle. The image you see here is looking over the shoulder of a young weaver from Van Buren. He is weaving into a map of Maine, using nature postcards that relate to what he has studied about the habitats of animals and plants of Maine.

Later in March I began an art project with Community Partners, a Maine organization that serves the needs of disabled adults. We have been working to create a collaborative weaving as a gift for the retiring director. I hope to post images of the completed weaving in the near future.

In March I was also an Artist in Residence at the East Rochester (NH) Annex. We unveiled six collaborative classroom weavings all based on the children's favorite authors Here is a picture of two very proud kindergartners working on their Clifford weaving. (I wish I could include images of all the weavings here, but I will try to "weave" them into my website at various places.)

April brought me to the Currier Gallery of Art in Manchester, where I was an Artist in Residence for about six days. During this time I worked on a tapestry of my design of the Brave Boat Harbor area near my home. I spoke with museum visitors about the nature of tapestry weaving and about the Currier's own tapestry titled "The Return of the Gypsies".

Today is May 21, and I am in the final days of a 24 day residency in the Brookline, NH Elementary schools. I have worked with every school child to create a small individual weaving, plus I worked with the 3rd and 5th grades to create classroom collaborative weavings. On June 4th, we will have a culminating event to unveil the eight large collaborative weavings that illustrate characteristics of water and different habitats. These weavings will be installed in several locations throughout the two schools.

As I move into late May and I see those warm (hopefully) June days lounging ahead of me, I feel a great excitement about spending time in my studio. I have a large task ahead of me...the Button Project. I have been invited to exhibit this piece in a group textile show at the Currier in July, so my work is mapped out for me! I will be focused on completing this piece before I leave for Nova Scotia with my family in late June.

Thanks to all of you for a terrific school year, and my blessings for a happy healthy summer!
