This three panel series of textile artworks began as an exploration of the symbol of the house and home. My first designs for this series explored the house as a temple, as a refuge, and as an intersection of human life. I sampled ideas, designs and played with patterns and colors. I looked at houses that were rooted, planted and also floating in space. I came to understand that a home is where people learn the values that carry them through a lifetime. In our home we learn how to relate to other human beings, the environment and how to make our way in the world. Home is the foundation for human development.

In late December 2004, the tsunami swept through Southeast Asia. I saw whole villages obliterated. My artistic focus on home as a refuge and a foundation for human growth and safety was uprooted. My vision shifted from the image of a home to that of a collection of homes, or a village.

These three works are a tribute to the villages of this world; villages that are a collection of homes, a collection of human life, and collection of places where human lives intersect and grow.
