Button Project Update: May, 2002
The days fly by, the daffodils have come and gone, and I am in the final days of my last residency of this school year. This means that in less than two weeks I will be able to devote my energy full time to the Button Project. I will be ready to sew buttons in the middle of June. Watch for my e-mail invitation to join me. My hope is to have about five button sewing gatherings.
In early April, I visited NYC with my family. We made a trip down to the WTC site, which you now see from a viewing platform set up beside the little church. There is not much to see at the WTC site now, the rubble is gone. There is a big empty hole, and a lot of construction trailers.
But what did make a deep impression on me was the "community art" that has sprung up all around the little church. There are literally thousands of paper cranes, shoes with letters, photographs, many ball caps, t-shirts, American flags, poems, songs, beads, and prayers.
Thank you again to all the many of you that have sent me buttons and notes of good will. I will be in touch soon about button sewing!
Peace,
Sarah
